Advent and Christmas in Český Krumlov
This year’s advent and approaching Christmas celebrations in Český Krumlov will start on the first advent Sunday on 30 November. The commencement of advent will be in a poetic tone and will include lighting up the Christmas tree and a festive revelation of the newly reconstructed water fountain with the Plague Column on the Svornosti square.
For a period of six weeks the visitors of Český Krumlov can indulge in the spirit of Christmas and the romantic winter magic. The rich Christmas celebration programme will be on every weekend from Friday till Sunday. The traditional Christmas Fair will take place with the famous Christmas gingerbread cookies, mulled wine and hot mead. This year you can sample locally made products with the KLASA seal of quality. A second year sequel of the artistic happening producing the felt picture “St. Barbara’s Flowers” will take place on Wednesday 3 December. Both children and adults will flock to the Svornosti square on Friday 5 December to witness the devilish games with angelic assistance and the traditional arrival of St. Nicolas.
Christmas is most eagerly anticipated by children. According to the tradition, they will be able to deliver their Christmas wishes to Baby Jesus during the Silver Sunday. Lady Winter will make an appearance on the main Krumlov square on that day and Baby Jesus will open his post office near the Zlatý Anděl Hotel in the afternoon.
As in the previous years, the most famous Czech Christmas mass by Jan Jakub Ryb „Hej, mistře!" (“Hey master!”) will be performed. The concert takes place in the Monastery Church of the Divine Body on Friday 12 December from 6 pm with a second performance from 7.30 pm. The third advent weekend will be dedicated to the second annual charity flea market and concert taking place in Traveller’s Hostel. Proceeds from both these events will be donated to the Childrens’ Home in Horní Planá.
One day before the Christmas Eve you can sing carols and view a live Nativity Scene – a story about the birth of Jesus Christ. On the Christams Eve you can come to celebrate with our castle bears who are already looking forward to their gourmet Christmas meal.
