200 YEARS OF PASSION PLAYS IN HOŘICE

This year marks 200 years of the first documented performance of Passion plays in Hořice na Šumavě. Project 200 Years of Passion Plays in Hořice was developed to commemorate this anniversary and aims to recall the former glory of this Šumava phenomenon.

The newly renovated premises of Poor Clares convent in Český Krumlov will hold the major part of the celebrations from 28 May to 28 September 2016 - a bilingual Czech -German exhibition of 200 Years of Passion Plays in Hořice, presenting the story of Šumava mysteries and of the life and suffering of Jesus Christ. Text passages will be accompanied by rich visual objects of Hořice Passion Plays , largely digitized from the newly discovered glass plates by Český Krumlov photographic studio of Franz and Josef Seidel.

Film screening of The Region of Czech Passion Plays, documenting the re-birth of passion plays by Czech settlers in 1947, will play an integral part of the exhibition. The exhibit will also feature surviving three-dimensional historical model of Passion plays theatre from 1893, with the dimensions 224 × 84 × 62 cm, parts of former theater costumes, posters, promotional materials and a stone ball from original equipment used to produce thunder sound effect.

The project of 200 Years of Passion Plays in Hořice na Šumavě will conclude with celebratory concert of Jaroslav Krček and Musica Bohemica and their vocal-instrumental piece Hořice Passion Plays (Mysterium Hoericense) in the monastery of the the church of Boží Tělo and Virgin Mary the Pained on September 28th. This closing ceremony will follow the traditional August performances in an outdoor amphitheatre in Hořice na Šumavě.
