Exhibitions to Honour the Life and Work of Egon Schiele, Celebrations on Schiele's 120th birth anniversary

For the year 2010 the Egon Schiele Art Center has prepared a series of exhibitions and symposia of Czech, Austrian and German artists to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of Egon Schiele (1890 - 1918), a world-famous artist of Czech, German and Austrian origin with a strong tie to the town of Český Krumlov.

Starting from 17 April 2010 you can view paintings, drawings and watercolours on loan from the National Gallery in Prague, Moravian Gallery in Brno, the Viennese Leopold Museum and from New York-based Neue Galerie as well as from the estate of Serge Sabarsky (1912 - 1996) who was one of the most important collectors of Austrian and German expressionism and co-founder of the Schiele Center in Český Krumlov. Included will also be works on loan from St. Etienne Gallery in New York and from private collectors. The exhibition will also present some of Schiele's close friends, some of whom were frequent guests in Český Krumlov, such as Anton Peschka or Erwin Osen. Also on exhibition will be originals of today world-famous photographs of Schiele from Josef Anton Trčka.

In parallel with Schiele's exhibition there will be independent exhibitions opened by contemporary respected artists from the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany: Ona B., Bernadette Huber, Alois Mitter, Lucie Novotná, Robert Schad, Roman Týc. From January to March this year the artists also reside in the Egon Schiele Art Center studios creating projects on pre-set themes for this commemorative year, such as Schiele's women, homage to landscape painting, a man, figure and movement, enfant terrible...

A newly created special library and study room with dozens of books about Schiele and catalogues from his exhibitions is another contribution to the anniversary celebrations. In June the library will receive a new addition in the form of a new book prepared by the Center by Franz Wischin - Egon Schiele and Český Krumlov. In this book you can read about Schiele's stays in the town in Czech, English and German as well as about his relationships with the locals, about his models and last but not least you can view Krumlov-inspired motives on Schiele's drawings and paintings and compare them against reality both today and in Schiele's time.

Please accept our invitation to the Egon Schiele Art Center and make your own opinion about the artistic genius of this painter born 120 years ago and about the talent of his followers!
