Welcome on Saint Jacob´s Pilgrimage Bohemia - Bavaria - the Tyrol

The pilgrimage has been important historical event since the beginning of the early European culture. One of the most famous is Saint Jacob´s pilgrimage to the Spanish town of Santiago de Compostella the town included in UNESCO´List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage as well as Český Krumlov was open in Český Krumlov.

The town which celebrates 15th anniversary of being included in UNESCO´List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage is the starting point of pilgrimage of Saint Jacob, Jesus´ disciple and apostle.The route which is 135 km long starts on Ist castle courtyard and continues to Kájov, Světlík, Frymburk, Přední Výtoň and Svatý Tomáš through Austrian Mühlviertel and later Bavaria to the legendary pilgrimage site in Spain. The pinnacle of the first stage is no doubt Premostratensian closter in Austrian town of Schlägel. The route is marked with the symbol of Saint Jacob´s shell so-called pecten. It belongs to the important atributes of Jacob´s symbolism. Saint Jacob is usually depicted with a sword with which he was executed. To remind the fact that he is pilgrimages´patron he is dressed in the pilgrimage clothes decorated with shell or with a starkly, a pouch, a bottle and a shell.

The pilgrimage in Český Krumlov was opened on Saint Jacob´s Holiday, 25th July 2007. Ing. Jitka Zikmundová, the Krumlov vice-mayor, Father Václav Pícha, Český Krumlov vicar and tourism organisation delegates from Upper Austria and Bavaria who were great help to its opening.
