Český Krumlov Becomes a Center of Tourism as It Celebrates 20th Anniversary of UNESCO Listing

This year Český Krumlov will celebrate 20th anniversary of being listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list. A rich programme is already in place for all the main cultural and social events. The town will also become a topic of school competitions as well as a destination for tourism and conservation experts.

20 years UNESCO The celebrations will culminate in December with an international conference on Modern Management of UNESCO Monuments. Among participants will be also other Czech sites listed in UNESCO List in December 1992 - the cities of Prague and Telč. A 20th UNESCO anniversary is an occasion to exchange experiences with experts worldwide, according to the Vice-Mayor of Český Krumlov, Ms. Jitka Zikmundová.

A new logo remembering the 20th UNESCO anniversary will appear at a number of events with a long tradition in the town. You should definitely not miss the International Music Festival (IMF) which will celebrate 21 years of existence this year. Last year the Festival has attracted over 20 thousand viewers, an increase of one third versus previous year. This year the organizers have revealed several star names making a Festival appearance between 20July and 18 August: there will by barytonist Dmitri Hvorostovsky, sopranist Angela Gheorghiu or Boban i Markovič Orkestar.

Theatre fans can this year watch two operas, two comedies, a ballet, a bandit legend and a comic revue. The famous Argentinean tenor José Cura will again perform in front of the unique Revolving Auditorium in Český Krumlov. As last year, he will sing the title role in Pagliacci.

In the past 20 years Český Krumlov has turned into a center of several events which cross over the town, regional and country borders. Most popular are the Five-petalled Rose Celebrations attracting over 20 thousand medieval games and celebrations fans annually. Chamber Music Festival has an authentic character resonating with the Castle environment and the Baroque Castle Night is a true jewel of an event and a feast for all senses. Mid September the Baroque Arts Festival will present a musical feast, opening its 5th year with a festive concert in the Masque Hall of the Chateau commemorating the 20th anniversary of the town's listing in the UNESCO list. The present for this jubilee has been uncovered in the archives by the Baroque music ensemble Hof-Musici under Ondřej Macek: the concert will present a modern age premiere of a celebratory cantata from 18th century to celebrate the birthday of Josef Adem Schwarzenberg who has given the town its Baroque face.

Town visitors will appreciate both permanent year-round attractions and new additions, such as the new Castle Museum opened in the beginning of 2011. The year-round Castle Museum expositions are included in the Český Krumlov Card offer which gives you a 50% discount for the Regional Museum, Museum Photo Studio Seidel and Egon Schiele Art Center Gallery as well. New attractive programmes are on offer for schools, sport teams and other groups of children and teens. Pupils and students can travel through time while learning about historical sites, reveal the secrets and test their skills while producing photographs with a method used at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Museum Photo Studio Seidel or take a bike or boat trip through the lovely landscape around Český Krumlov.
