Winter visit of the Monasteries Český Krumlov
In February and March, you can enjoy many interesting lectures, fairs, concerts and also various workshops or carnival crafts in the Monasteries Český Krumlov.
Become detectives and follow together with your children trails of monastic mysteries and discover something that usual visitor will not even notice. The search will lead you to corners of the entire area, both inside and outside, into the cellar and attic.
If you are creative visitors, you can visit several courses that take place in the craft workshops during both months. Under the guidance of experienced craftsmen, you can try the production of wound beads, silk mandalas, tin casting or production of a home-made soap or even a book!
You are also cordially invited to meet musical and visual arts of the teachers from the Elementary Art School in Český Krumlov on 14 February. On February 16 you can enjoy a theatrical performance called Mannuscript.
On the first Saturday in March (March 2) there will be a carnival fair (small market) awaiting you with traditional delicacies. In addition to opening of many craft workshops, you can also prepare yourself for a carnival parade and make a variety of masquerade masks or rhythm instruments. The original accordion duo Hrajeto will refresh the fair and craft in the monastery courtyard.
Not only the carnival but also the fast fair on 16th March will offer traditional goodies, and this time without meat for a period of 40 days of fasting. It's possible to go meat-free? So come and taste!
Permanent exhibition
The Český Krumlov Monasteries exhibition in the former Minorite monastery acquaints visitors with the history of the Minorite Order as well as the rich architectural history of the grounds.
The interactive exhibition of human skills and the arts of our ancestors presents visitors with the traditional knowledge and skills of medieval monasteries. Visitors can look through an alchemist's kitchen and learn about how food was stored in the Middle Ages. Period quarters demonstrate how people lived during the Gothic and Renaissance periods, and you can even try historical clothing. Another attraction is the herbal workshop and soap workshop, recently extended to include new interactive features. In the scriptorium, you can create your own stencil decoration, try writing with a quill, or have fun in the playroom with replicas of medieval toys, machines, and inventions. For a spooky experience, visit the mysterious attic areas, where you'll witness a Danse Macabre, a Camera Obscura, and a large model of the historic center of this part of Český Krumlov.
The exhibition Life and Art in the Convent of the Poor Clares acquaints visitors with the monastic life of the Sisters of St. Clare in historical context of with medieval art and historical piety.
