The first mention from historical sources is from 1366, even though the settlement of Dolní Pláně is mentioned in 1358. The township of Věžovatá Pláně originally belonged to the dominion of the lords of Pořešín. In the 15th century it became the property of the Drochovec clan from Omlenice, later to be passed over to the Krumlov estates. In 1785 a parish and small church was built. The laws of the time stated, however, that for every parish there must be at least a minor school, and one was founded in Věžovatá Pláně in 1788. Rights of patronage over the parish and school were held by the monastery in Vyšší Brod. The original church was wooden, until in 1800 the cornerstone of today's stone church was set in place.
Parish church of St. Anna - originally wooden tower, in 1879 newly built of stone.
The town lies at the base of the Poluška Highlands (locally called Kuklíky)
