Origin of the Name :
1359 - Sobienow
1369 - Sobyenow
1841 - Soběnov
Soběnov - Soběnův dvůr
The first written mention of the town is from 1358, when the brothers Ješek, Beneš, and Jindřich, sons of Jindřich of Velešín, divided their father's inheritance in such a way that each of them kept a third of the castle Velešín - then Beneš received Smrhov, Jindřich received Skaleny, Soběnov, and Benešov, and Ješek received Nesmeň. In 1387 the Rosenberg brothers bought the entire estate of Velešín for 3000 kopas. The Rosenbergs thus owned Soběnov with fuedal rights plus Přísečno, then Skaleny Brumovy, Skaleny pusté, and Popelice, which came with the Soběnov parish. In 1418 Ulrich II. von Rosenberg granted Soběnov freedom upon his death. There was a blaze in 1883 which turned the entire village to ashes and destroyed almost all documents and historical monuments.
Church of St. Mikuláš - originally Gothic, made Baroque in the mid 17th century, reconstructed in 1853. The Gothic origin is evident on the tower.
Ruins of Sokolčí Castle - founded in the 13th century by Beneš of Michalovice, in the 14th century belonged to the lords of Velešín, most likely incoporated into the Rosenbergs clan in 1387. Abandoned from 1451.
Near the town the nature park Soběnovská Highlands spreads across the countryside (locally called Slepičí hory, or Chicken mountains - Kohout, or Rooster, is the highest peak) with mixed growth forest areas.
