The famous Lords of Rožmberk (Rosenberg) who once owned the dominion are back! The spirit of the Renaissance age is brought back to life for three days with the hubbub of jousts, craft fairs, medieval music, street plays, and fencing duels to culminate with the highlight of the festival – a spectacular procession in historical costumes featuring knights on horseback and many notables linked with the history of the town. No matter what the age or the expectations of the visitors are, all will certainly enjoy themselves.

This Year’s Theme

This year we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the renewed tradition of Five-petalled Rose Celebrations that started in 1990. An event from 1555 when William of Rosenberg joined the two previously independent settlements – Latrán and Old Town – will become the key theme of this year’s Celebrations.

Performers in the historical and accompanying schedule of events

The Five-petalled Rose Celebrations schedule of events will see nearly 70 ensembles giving a total of 170 performances on 10 different stages in the town centre. The main historical costumed procession will include 750 costumed persons.

4 – 4.30 pm Malé divadélko Praha – “A Tale of Little Cock and Hen” (a comedy) – a well-known tale about a hen trying to save the greedy little cock. Greed and avarice are the main theme of this tale but could it also be a reflection of today’s world?

5 – 6 pm ŠUS Theatre – “From the Old Bohemian Legends” – according to Alois Jirásek. Six famous legends ranging from the arrival of Father Čech to the Maiden War enacted in a humorous fashion with puppets and marionettes. Actors perform on a dynamic stage behind an improvised palisade and in front of it so they can conduct a dialogue in a direct contact with the audience.

6.30 – 7 pm Malé divadélko Praha – “Box Tale”. This is a simple story featuring king Krabicius, princess Krabička, old hag Krabice and a dragon Krabičák. Children are engaged as co-creators of this performance. Painted wooden boxes are used instead of puppets.

5.30 pm – 12 am LITTLE MEDIEVAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

5.30 – 5.45 pm Krless – a legendary medieval music band which has been performing European music of high medieval ages, i.e. 13th – 15th centuries. Their music echoes medieval spirituality, a tavern dance as well as an oriental sensuality and a rock drive of the modern world. Krless interpret medieval music in a medieval crossover style. Do not expect a living history style reconstruction or any attempts of a “truly medieval” interpretation. Instead Krless liberally transform medieval music with the energy expected by the modern audience. They often mix musical styles and medieval music Krless-style is a mixture of original ancient music, present-time folk, folklore, blues, rock as well as Jewish and Arabic music.

7.15 – 8.15 pm Góthien – musician from Pilsen performing on medieval instrument replicas and singing the songs of high medieval ages (13th – 15th century) from all corners of ancient Europe in their original languages. This is however not an exact interpretation of the original music score. Their style is to remake medieval songs but using the instruments of that period: drums, pipes, shawms, cister, hurdy gurdy and a fiddle. The band has been performing with current band members since 2008. Since then they have played on many locations both at home and abroad, at castles and chateaus, during fairs and on festive occasions. They have performed as a front runner for Blackmore’s Night during their concerts for several seasons.

8.45 – 10 pm Řemdih – this originally rock band has now a repertoire comprising of medieval music in all its forms. There are drinking songs, love sings, spiritual multi-vocal chants and courtly dances. Fiery instrumental pieces are put in contrast with wistful multi-vocal songs sung a capella.

10.30 pm – 12 am BraAgas – their genre is best expressed by the popular term “world music”. The band´s repertoire comprises of folk songs from across Europe – Spain, Occitania, Galicia, Sephardic songs, songs from Scandinavia and the Balkans. BraAgas are unique in their elaborate vocals, an interesting musical arrangement and vivacious rhythms. Among their greatest achievements is the victory in the 5th year of the Colours Talent Award. They are also holders of two “Angel” awards for the best world music album of the year in 2009 for their “Tapas” album and in 2014 for the album “Yallah”. BraAgas perform their medieval European songs during various history-themed events.

Cirkus LeGrando – this is a mobile circus form kids and youth. Its mission is to educate and create through circus art. Various projects for kids and youth take place in a small circus tent culminating in a public performance for parents and friends. The goal is to reintroduce the forgotten art of the circus to both kids and adults. The programmes focus on development of motor skills, artistic and presentation skills and reinforce a positive self-image of the participating kids and young adults in the spirit of the experience education technique. They educate by challenging the participants to stretch their limits and through adventure. Well trained lectors guarantee a sound and safe experience.

This enactment of a romantic legend about Vítek of Prčice and his sons will be enhanced by the nightly skies and many captivating fire effects.

The puppets – marionettes – play, sing and demonstrate their special skills: Longshanks really stretches, Girth expands and Keen sees through it all. This takes place on a classic spyglass stage and around it. Gripping moments alternate with lighter ones and all works out well of course in the end.

12.45 – 1.30 pm Dokola Theatre – “The Brave Mikeš” – a classic fairytale about a boy who sets out to travel the world. But the world is not an easy place! You will meet malice, envy and a life-threatening adventure. But Mikeš holds on and wins easily over both the dragon and stupidity. In addition he also manages to save the princesses and this achievement will surely be rewarded by the King and Queen…

4.45 – 5.35 pm ŠUS Theatre – “From the Old Bohemian Legends” – according to Alois Jirásek. Six famous legends ranging from the arrival of Father Čech to the Maiden War enacted in a humorous fashion with puppets and marionettes. Actors perform on a dynamic stage behind an improvised palisade and in front of it so they can conduct a dialogue in a direct contact with the audience.

5.45 – 6.30 pm Věra Klásková – “Old Irish Ballads Recital Sung in English Original”. Vocals and guitar: Věra Klásková (Gothic Hall at the Prelature)

6.45 – 7.15 pm Malé divadélko Praha – “Box Tale”. This is a simple story featuring king Krabicius, princess Krabička, old hag Krabice and a dragon Krabičák. Children are engaged as co-creators of this performance. Painted wooden boxes are used instead of puppets.

7.45 – 8.30 pm Dokola Theatre – “How Jíra Became a Miller” – a classic fairytale about.. well about how Jíra became a miller of course!!

9 – 9.30 pm Malé divadélko Praha - “A Tale of Little Cock and Hen” (a comedy) – a well-known tale about a hen trying to save the greedy little cock. Greed and avarice are the main theme of this tale but could it also be a reflection of today’s world?
