Escualo Quintet and Gabriela Vermelho - “Tango argentino”

Dates From - To
06.08.2015   (Th) 20:30

Escualo kvintet, MHF ČK Gabriela Vermelho, MHF ČK

The Tango Argentino program offers a perfect combination of temperament and passion with artistic music and dance mastery. Five excellent instrumentalists of the Escualo Quintet, charismatic singer Gabriela Vermelho, holder of the Alfréd Radok Award, and the dance formation Tangueros, will perform in the project.

The Escualo Quintet is a unique formation of professional musicians who dedicate themselves to Tango Argentino music styles. This young ensemble has a number of prestigious performances at international festivals to their credit. In terms of instruments the Escualo Quintet is identical to the quintet of Argentinean musician and composer Astor Piazzolla. In interpretation the Escualo Quintet focuses on a combination of music styles, dance style Tango típico and concert style Tango nuevo, which is a fascinating synthesis of temperamental Argentinean folklore, classical music and jazz. The quintet was named after Piazzolla’s composition “Escualo”, which translates as “shark”.

Charismatic singer and composer Gabriela Vermelho belongs to the most versatile and remarkable personalities of our music and theatre scene. In particular due to her unconventional approach to musical expression and the exceptional ability to master classical music, folklore as well as world music with clean style, she is rightfully considered an artist who cannot be categorized in one discipline. She received the Alfréd Radok Award for the role of enchantress Eva in the musical “Balada pro banditu” (English: Ballad for a Bandit) at the “Husa na provázku” theatre (English: “Goose on a String Theatre”) in Brno.

Tangueros is a continuously developing dance community of Argentinean Tango in Brno. The dance couple Markéta Růžičková and David Lang are its dancers and instructors. They have both attended seminars under the leadership of prestigious foreign instructors such as Ismael Ludman and Maria Mondino, Luciano Brigante and Alejandra Orozco, Sven Elze and Guggi Zuzakova and Luis Miguel S. Saavedra.

Roger Isaacs /counter tenor/, Musica Florea

Dates From - To
07.08.2015   (Fr) 19:30

Musica Florea, MHF ČK

Counter tenor Roger O. Isaacs comes from Cape Town in South Africa. He has enjoyed a highly successful solo career both in his native country and in the USA. Isaacs has performed with world-renowned ensembles in venues ranging from the Kennedy Center to Washington National Cathedral. He was hailed by the Washington Post as a “countertenor quite extraordinary both for vocal quality and for his mastery of baroque style.” His repertoire is extremely wide – from early music works to pieces by composers of the 20th century and thanks to that he has established himself as one of the best American countertenors.

The Musica Florea ensemble was founded in 1992 by the cellist and conductor Marek Štryncl as one of the first serious initiatives in the field of stylistically-informed performance in the Czech Republic. Playing on original instruments or copies thereof, study of period sources and aesthetics, historical research, and creative revival of forgotten performing styles and methods have become indispensible and characteristic traits of the ensemble. The ensemble’s repertoire includes instrumental chamber music, secular and sacred vocal-instrumental music, orchestral concertos, and monumental works in the genres of symphonic music, opera, and oratorio from the early Baroque to the twentieth century.

“James Bond Music” and world musicals (Debbie Gravitte, Capathia Jenkins a Hugh Panaro, Michael Krajewshi /conductor/)

Dates From - To
01.08.2015   (Sa) 20:30

Debbie Gravitte, MHF ČK Capathia Jenkins, MHF ČK Hugh Panaro, MHF ČK

The IMF Český Krumlov continues in the trend of presenting world musical repertoire with an original interpretation. The trio of famous American singers and Broadway soloists – Debbie Gravitte /soprano/, Capathia Jenkins /soprano/ and Hugh Panaro /tenor/ under the leadership of conductor Michael Krajewshi, a specialist in this genre, will take the audience to the Broadway theatre stages and the glittering world of American musicals during the concert.

Debbie Gravitte has had a varied career taking her from the Broadway Stage to the Symphony Hall and points between. She won the prestigious Tony Award for Best Featured Actress In A Musical for Jerome Robbin’s Broadway, along with a Drama Desk Award Nomination as well as the New York Showstopper Award.

Capathia Jenkins can definitely act but all those who know her also know that this diva can blow and blow and blow you right off this planet. This woman who grappling with two dueling passions each with a strong grip: acting and music, yet she refuses to pick one because they both represent her soul. Capathia approaches a song the same way she approaches a script, like an artist. She looks for the nuances, the secret hidden within the notes or text. She seeks the melody, harmony and rhythm.

Hugh Panaro has been described as "the leader of Broadway’s dwindling supply of great leading men." Critically lauded and adored by fans, he demonstrates versatility, charisma, tremendous vocal talent, and, in the words of one former costar, movie star good looks. His first role, Friedrich, in a regional production of The Sound of Music, came when he was twelve. In 1988, Hugh originated the role of Marius Pontmercy in the first national touring production of Les Misérables, moving up to the Broadway company several months later. He was then cast by Hal Prince as Raoul de Chagny, the romantic young hero in Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical The Phantom of the Opera.
