..Exhibition "What If.."

Dates from - to
26.04.2013 - 03.11.2013   (Mo-Su) 09:00 - 18:00

Exhibition "What, if ..." Regional Museum Český Krumlov

The regions of the upper part of the Vltava River and the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel are the locations of a number of material proofs from times both recent and long past: many projects were created, built, arranged and originated. These are often both material and intangible memorials of exceptional quality and undisputed intra-regional renown. These are joint projects of visionaries, pragmatic creators, creative artists and entire generations of local citizens. A number of projects from the fields of architecture, science, craft, trade, creative arts but also literature and music have been subject of many studies, publications, specialized seminars and exhibitions. The public has also learned about them.

But there is a number of plans surprisingly well preserved fro projects small and large-scale which were never realized for a multitude of reasons. Who were these visionaries, engineers, idealists, overly ambitious politicians or arrogant ideological dictators? What did they intend to create in the Czech-Austrian border region and why their ideas were never realized?

These are the questions raised by the exhibition called "What If...", displaying 25 projects from different eras ranging from medieval times to 1989. The tri-lingual (Czech, German, English) exhibition will be presented at the exhibition halls on the ground floor (approx. 350 sq. m of exhibition space). Visitors will be able to see original historical documents, plans, models and photographs as well as audio-visual elements and artistic animations, often using the required dose of overstatement and humor.

Type of offer: for individuals and groups

..The Cross of Záviš - Splendor Mysticus

Dates from - to Last tour
26.04.2013 - 03.11.2013   (Mo-Su) 09:00 - 18:00 16:00 hour

Vyšší Brod Monastery The Cross of Záviš Monastery Vyšší Brod

As part of the Land Exhibition, the Abbey of Vyšší Brod will present the legendary Cross of Záviš which is reputed to be of same importance as the Czech crown jewels. The splendid reliquary has been probably made for the coronation of the Hungarian King. He store there a piece of the Holy Cross on which Jesus Christ has died. The precious Cross has become property of the hereditary monastery of the powerful Rosenbergs through complex twists of fates where the monks have worshipped it for centuries. The Nazis have stolen the Cross during WWII and during Communism it has been nationalized and moved to Prague. This golden Cross set with an unusually high amount of precious stones and pearls has been returned to Vyšší Brod along with the Cistercian monks and now it will be publicly displayed under strict security measures for the first time after more than 70 years in Southern Bohemia.

THE CROSS OF ZÁVIŠ - Splendor mysticus

A multi-media exposition set in the large Gothic vaults of the ancient Abbey called The Cross of Záviš - Splendor Mysticus (a mythical shine) will explain various hypotheses about the origin of this exceptional proof of medieval goldsmith art. It will explain the legend of finding the True Cross by St. Helen, the importance of relics and the power struggles between the Přemyslovci, Vítkovci and the Habsburgs. Visitors can also learn about the surprising results of the mysterious crypt exploration of the Rosenbergs who were buried seated according to the legend.

WORLD OF THE CISTERCIAN MONKS

Visitors of the Czech-Austrian Land Exhibition will be able to see for the first time the newly reconstructed interior of the noble Abbey Cathedral. The exposition World of the Cistercian Monks presents interesting information on the origins of the order, its international activities but also about the famous altar of Vyšší Brod. Extended viewing tour includes the capital hallway, an architectural jewel of the Czech Gothic period. This is the burial place of Záviš of Falkenstein who donated to the monks this splendid reliquary bearing his name. This once powerful regent of the Bohemian Kingdom become and outlaw towards the end of his life and died by the hangman's hand. Ancient sorts of roses and lilies will be in bloom in the renewed Garden of Eden to commemorate the cross-border Land Exhibition. The Garden of Eden represents a traditional focal point of spiritual journey and meditation in European culture.

MEDIEVAL ARTS TREASURES

Among the Czech Cistercian monasteries, the Abbey of Vyšší Brod possesses over the largest collection of arts, preserved largely to present times as if by miracle. The Monastery Museum will exhibit artifacts of top European value for the first time. Among these arts treasures you can find e.g. table paintings of Madonna of Vyšší Brod, Madonna of Zlatá Koruna, Crucifixion of Vyšší Brod, an unusual Italian treasure chest and numerous other Gothic sculptures and table paintings. You can of course also visit the most beautiful monastery library in the Czech Republic.

..An exhibition introducing burghers´ life and trade development

Freistadt Brewery

NOBILITY AND MONASTERIES
First part of the exhibition is themed "Nobility and Monasteries" and their role in the development of the land Visitors will find out about the role of noble houses such as the Rosenbergs, Zelkingers or Starhembergs and their feudal world and the role of the monasteries (e.g. Baumgartenberg, Schlägl, Zlatá Koruna, Vyšší Brod) in the building of the land but also demonstrate the cross-border cultural dimension of this historical period.

TOWNS AND TRADE

The second part of the exhibition looks at towns and trade, focusing on the development of the town of Freistadt. Visitors will learn about the social structure of the medieval town and about the burghers running their trade and their lives (living, clothing, food, property, trade activities) as well as about the artisanal guilds and services in the town. Another important aspect stressed in the exhibition is the link to the agricultural surroundings of the town, delivering raw foodstuffs (such as hops and barley).

BEER BREWING

The third part of the exhibition is linked to the building and is devoted to the beer brewery. Beer brewing will be explained alongside the cultural and culinary importance of this beverage. The economic role of beer brewing is notable in the awarded privileges (Freistadt 1363) giving the burghers the right to brew beer. The burghers holding the right to brew beer have joined together in 1770 into an association called "Braucommune in Freidstadt" (i.e. Brewing Association in Freistadt) in existence until today as the only association of its kind in the world as a rarity in this town. Another attraction is the walk through brewer's malt attic.

..An exhibition focusing on trade and transportation

Bad Leonfelden

The initial part of the exhibition is themed "Trade and Transportation" in a general fashion, stressing the economic activity between Southern Bohemia and Mühlviertel lasting and deepening for entire centuries. The double-sided role of the trade route is presented in its controversy; on the one hand the trade with Bohemia (particularly salt and iron) brings large profits; on the other hand armies can move quickly along these routes (Hussites, Swedes, Imperial armies) bringing terror and violence but also diseases.

Next part looks at regulatory and infrastructure roles of the road while focusing on phenomena such as legally regulated routes with storage rights of a particular town (Freistadt) and "smugglers´ routes". Visitors will find out about goods transportation at the time of the horse-drawn wagon, looking at wagons and their technical equipment and also at smuggling methods and the absence of safe routes (due to robbers). One of the topics will also be the trade activity of Bad Leonfelden and the rivalry with Freistadt - caused among others by the economic conflict between the king and notable noble houses.

Last part looks at the latest history of the region with the perspective of disintegration and new integration. The political changes after 1945 and formation of the iron curtain have decimated trade along these ancient trade routes but have also strongly affected local inhabitants. There will be presented phenomena such as routes and a road in Mühlviertel which suddenly led nowhere, opening of a few border checkpoints as well as the changes on the other side of the border caused by the expulsion of the German population after WWII followed by migration and shortly after a new expulsion. The creation of an impenetrable border between West and East during the Cold War resulted in a complete destruction of border villages. A new integration occurred after 1989 with the border opening and both countries joining the EU (hence the Land Exhibition title "Ancient Tracks, New Roads"). Various specific integration activities will be mention (co-operation between artists, biological exploration in the "green belt", cross-border tourism etc.).
