ST. WENCESLAS CELEBRATIONS 11th Year and International Folklore Festival Český Krumlov 12th Year
In honour of St. Wenceslas, Patron Saint of the Czech Land, town of Český Krumlov and patron of winemakers and beer brewers Celebration of Czech Republic State Holiday
Term: 28 – 30 September 2012
In August 2002 the hundred-year flood has hit Český Krumlov. A countless amount of volunteers has helped to clear the damages. Many individuals and companies have made financial donations to the town of Český Krumlov. People have helped also by buying a T-shirt with a simple statement “I Am Helping Český Krumlov to Get Above Water Again”. The first St. Wenceslas Celebrations, held in September 2002, were held in honour of St. Wenceslas, Patron Saint of Český Krumlov and with thanks to everyone who helped the town get back on track. As in its first year, this year’s Celebrations on the 10th anniversary of the floods are dedicated to everyone who helped the town of Český Krumlov. We cordially invite you to visit our town during the St. Wenceslas Celebrations, an autumnal celebration of friendships, common history, fateful meetings, good food and drink with a good dose of entertainment.

A new local musical formation, with new energy and new experiences. A new band of experiences musicians of Český Krumlov will present the greatest hits of Czechoslovak rock and pop scene. There will be new musical arrangements of famous songs by stars such as Lucie, Elán, Buty, Olympic, Richard Müller, Petr Muk or Vladimír Mišík. Locals will be familiar with the band members. A vocalist and piano player from Český Krumlov Jan Palkovič (PianoDuo) is the front man of the band. Second vocals and acoustic guitar are taken care of by the notorious Martin “Sam” Korčák (Papouškovo sirotci). The legendary Míra Bednář (Papouškovo sirotci) will play the bass guitar. Keyboard instruments are perfectly managed by Ivo Janoušek (PianoDuo). A solo guitar is played by Petr Špiroch (Dědoa míza) and the percussion master is none other than Martin “Tvarkýř” Tvaroh (Papouškovo sirotci).

An illuminated manuscript Liber depictus, also called the Codex of Krumlov, has been created in the 14th century in the Minorite Monastery in Český Krumlov and is a notable example of the medieval illumination in mid 14th century. A part of this manuscript telling the Legend of St. Wenceslas will be exhibited during the St. Wenceslas Celebrations.
The illustrated manuscript Liber depictus, the so-called Codex of Krumlov was probablycreated on order of the Rosenbergs and in 1782 it reached Vienna from the Krumlov Jesuits. Today it is located in the depository of the Austrian National Library. The manuscript is dominated by illustrations above written word which describes individual ink drawings. The Codex has many parts, containing the Bible of the Poor (Biblia pauperum), two biblical parables and illustrations of legends of 21 saints. These legends include the Legend of St. Wenceslas, his grandmother St. Ludmila and St. Procopius. Three different persons probably made the ink drawings.
Liber depictus is also a proof of the ambitions of the most powerful nobility of the Bohemian Kingdon, the House of Rosenbergs, to compete with their seat of Český Krumlov against the royal and imperial city of Prague. Their attempts include the dedication of the church of Český Krumlov to St. Vitus (as in Prague) and the liturgical ceremonies linked to it but also the support of arts (an example of which is Liber depictus) and education (Latin school an the so-called Chaplain Library). St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila play a role in this as they open the legends series in the Krumlov Codex just after the biblical beginning.
