An exhibition "Story of the Town of Český Krumlov"

“In nostra civitate Crumnaw – in our town of Krumlov” … these are the proud opening words of a parchment scroll on which Henry of Rosenberg attached his seal on 2 August 1309. This scroll relates to a town which had for long centuries grown and prospered under the residence castle of the highest nobility of the land – lords of Krumlov, Rosenberg, Eggenberg and Schwarzenberg. It is not a founding charter per se, and many will also no doubt be surprised by its relatively modest size and austere appearance. This precious document stands however at the beginning of a fascinating story written, lived and experienced by the citizens of Český Krumlov – in times of glory and prosperity but also in times of conflict, stagnation and decline. The burghers of Krumlov whose privileges were often issued or confirmed by the kings and emperors had the highest economical, artisanal and commercial ambitions. This is evident in the long-term well-organized municipal administration but also provision of many services such as transportation, schooling, health care, cultural and spiritual development. The exhibition also shows the transformations of the town, its layout, municipal parts and some houses. Individual exhibition parts give evidence to a long-standing co-existence of the German, Czech and Jewish ethnicities in Český Krumlov. The reflection on the history of the town in 20th century presents the dramatic events of the two world wars, removal of the German population, the socialist era close to the iron curtain and also the remarkable transformation Český Krumlov has undergone since the political changes in 1989, being admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage list and until present time. There is also a unique “exhibition within an exhibition” in the form of various interesting finds uncovered during the landscaping works of the river banks and the adjustment of the Vltava river bank: starting with the oldest Antique coin found in Český Krumlov, through Medieval metal fragments and pieces of ceramics, material elements from day-to-day life from times of peace and war and ending with often peculiar objects discarded by the watermen while sailing down the sluices of Krumlov. Over 80 valuable original charters were loaned for this exhibition from the State Regional Archive in Český Krumlov and State Departmental Archive in Třeboň, making this the single biggest undertaking for the Regional Museum in Český Krumlov so far. Also exhibited are hundreds of photographs and dozens of 3-D objects from archeological excavations to artistic and artisanal collections – either from own depository or on loan from various other collections. The first part of the exhibition, covering the period from the ancient town history until 1945 will open to public starting from 23 September 2010 and opening of the second part, documenting the development of Český Krumlov from the end of second world war until present time is scheduled for 23 February 2011. This exhibition will be open until 31 December 2011 and there is a rich schedule of alterations, themed lectures and audiovisual projections.
