Further Information:

Petr Vok, the last male heir of the famous House of Rosenberg died on 6 November 1611. His death has ended the Rosenberg reign over Southern Bohemia which has lasted for nearly 400 years. Four centuries will have passed from this significant event in 2011.

Each generation of the Rosenberg has held the highest offices on the courts of Bohemian kings already since the first half of the 13th century. They had been important figures in both domestic and international matters. The Rožmberk castle was the original seat of the House. Český Krumlov became the Rosenberg residence in 1302. The Rosenbergs had gradually expanded their influence over the majority of Southern Bohemia. They had cared for the economy, established towns and representative dwellings across their domains, as well as initiating the building of splendid ecclesiastical and secular buildings and institutions. The South Bohemian landscape had been much influenced by their activity. Let’s remember the fame of the Rosenberg House during the Year of the Rosenbergs. The National Heritage Institute together with a number of partners have prepared many events and novelties for you.

The Exhibition "Story of Český Krumlov"
Please accept our invitation to walk through the history of the town of Český Krumlov.
This is so far the largest exhibition by the Regional Museum in both size and content will remind you of both the joyous and sad events in the town's history. You can also peek into period pharmacy, classroom or a shop.

The story of Český Krumlov commenced in the prehistoric period and continued through the Medieval Age until an important milestone - 2 August 1309. On this day Henry I. of Rosenberg attached his seal to a scroll in which Český Krumlov is called a town for the firs time. This small scroll in Latin bears thus great importance for Český Krumlov. This is your unique opportunity to view the original scroll at the exhibition in the Regional Museum.
Apart from this parchment scroll you can also view over 80 other highly historically valuable scrolls and archive documents. Among them are documents of Petr Vok, Maria Theresia or Rudolf II. and they are all literally breathing history.

The story written and lived by Český Krumlov inhabitants is told not only by documents but also by photos and painting. You can learn how the face of the town has changed over the centuries and how the streets and houses, some of them still preserved, have altered their appearance. During the exhibition you can visit a pharmacy, a classroom, a gentleman's drawing room or a coffee retail shop. The well-preserved period furniture as well as a number of interesting instruments and artifacts will enhance the feeling of going back in time.

The exhibition Story of Český Krumlov will please not only history fans but simply everyone who wishes to go down the memory lane or learn about the story of the life of one of the most beautiful towns.

First part of the exhibition, covering the period from most ancient history until 1945, was opened on 23 September.
The second part, covering the period from the end of World War II until present time, will be opened on 23 February 2011.
Both parts of the exhibition will be open to visitors until the end of 2011.

Castle Museum

Dates From - To
11.01.2011 - 31.12.2011   (Tu-Su) 10:00 - 17:00

..

Come join us for a trip through time! The new Castle Museum will bring you to the times of the Lords of Krumlov, Rosenbergs and other noble houses residing in Český Krumlov over the centuries and transforming its appearance. You can see a number of precious artifacts from the Castle depositories and you can see films from the beginning of the 20th century in the cinema.

The Castle Museum will be located in the previously unused building of the so-called Little Castle with a tower located on the second Castle courtyard. It will be open all year round and it will welcome its first visitors on 10 January 2011.

The Castle Museum will be a place for education but also a place of relaxation. You can be engulfed by history in the study room or relax with a cup of coffee in the ground floor café. A fresh, unusual view of the town from the Museum windows will be the icing on the cake. You will be able to witness a perfect harmony between architecture and landscape in the view of the town panorama shaped by two church towers.

You will be instantly transport to the 19th century when you enter the Museum. This period is painstakingly restored with a historic museum installation complete with tile stove, period lights or replicas of old museum showcases. Important noble houses residing in Český Krumlov will be presented in the first two rooms called "Hall of the Lords of the Rose" and "Hall of the Dukes of Krumlov". As you progress, you will enter the offices of the estate manager and the director of administration of the Schwarzenbergs as well as his private apartment. The original layout of the rooms as well as for example the colour scheme on the walls creates an impression of a lived-in place to which its owner may return at any moment.

The Museum will also present a number of precious artifacts from the Castle depositories - the Schwarzenberg guard collection, mint and armory artifacts or china. You can also view a model of the Český Krumlov castle as it looked in the middle of 16th century. One of the biggest attractions of the Castle Museum is set to be a fragment of a Baroque shrine with the skeleton of St. Reparatus from the former Minorite monastery in Český Krumlov. This shrine will form part of the ecclesiastical relics' exhibition. The viewing route will be concluded by a cinema showing films from the beginning of 20th century. These films were made by members of the Schwarzenberg house on various locations such as the Červený dvůr castle nearby and were until now hidden in the depositories in the Krumlov and Hluboká castles.

Museum entry fee will be around CZK 120. You will be able to walk the 29 rooms, areas and walkways comprising the Museum at your own pace or you can elect to borrow an audio guide (a record-playing device in the shape of an earphone) and listen to commentaries.

The Regional Museum in Český Krumlov is joining the Rosenberg Year celebrations with an exhibition named "The Rosenbergs" displaying the costume culture on the court of these noblemen. The exhibition will open on 11 June 2011.

Originals of historical Renaissance costumes can only seldom be found in the museum exhibitions and so the Regional Museum has decided to create a couple of intricate replicas of these splendid costumes from the period of the last Rosenbergs and so acquaint its visitors with the culture of this period.

These costumes have been fashioned after period portraits of William of Rosenberg, Petr Vok of Rosenberg, Eva of Rosenberg and Bohunka of Rosenberg. You will find our more about Renaissance fashion and dresses and learn about the technology of producing historical costumes replicas. You will also learn about contemporary use of historical costumes (in historical celebrations, theatre performances etc.).

Five-petalled Rose Celebrations

Dates From - To
17.06.2011 - 19.06.2011   (Fr-Su)

..

The Five-petalled Rose Celebrations 2011 will again allow you to take a peek into the Renaissance period during one weekend (17-19 June). The town will be filled with drumbeat and voices of wandering singers; both the common folk and the nobility will be entertained by the jugglers' and actors' tricks and everything will be complemented with the smell of roast meat and other delicacies. Brave knights carrying the flag with the coloured rose of their kin, noble ladies and the vassals will greet the town during a magnificent procession which will conclude the festive ceremonies. You will also be able to witness the nighttime fire procession, live chess or historical market.

Unlike previous years of the Celebrations when William of Rosenberg, the ruler of the Rosenberg dynasty, took the center stage and his younger brother Petr Vok of Rosenberg was only his guide or the organizer of the Celebrations, this year Sir Petr Vok will become the central figure of the 2011 Celebrations. Therefore we will remember some of the turning points in his life (such as the wedding of Petr Vok to Catherine of Ludanice in 1580) and we will also be reminded of some ancient legends (like the legend of the White Lady, the nanny of Petr Vok).

The Celebrations programme will be completed by a historical tournament named The Rosenberg Knightly Tournament or knights on horses and historical feast on the Rosenberg court, referring to the ancient legend of the House of Vítkovci. And the Brewery Gardens will be filled with music by Alan Stivell.
