Nokturno Gajdoši Brno
launches the musical season in Český Krumlov and is the longest-held festival of classical music in our town. This tradition began 22 years ago in May 1987, when the first Festival, albeit a very modest one, was held. The renowned Czech composer and conductor Jaroslav Krček, also Art Director of the Musica Bohemica Ensemble, is the spiritual leader and founder of this musical event. He is a well known and popular personality of the contemporary Czech music scene. Following the general political changes as well as local changes in the town itself after being listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List the mid 90’s, the organizers of the Festival of Chamber Music have decided to fundamentally alter the event, increase the quality of performing artists and redefine its image. From the 12th Festival in 1998 on, not only does the program include top Czech musicians, but also well-known artists from abroad, raising the Festival’s reputation to international levels. This marked increase in quality also meant that the Festival could start co-operating with the International Music Festival Prague Spring. The long-term dramaturge of the Prague Spring Festival and also a renowned musical publicist Mr. Antonín Matzner has been appointed Director the Festival of Chamber Music. The following year Maestro Josef Suk, a legendary violinist of international fame, has accepted the title of Honorary President of the Festival, thus providing support to the festival and further raising its profile. Throughout the 90’s, many new musical events were held in this attractive UNESCO-protected town. In the air of increasing competition, the Festival of Chamber Music Český Krumlov remains a first-class international musical event of European-level importance offering outstanding musical performances and unforgettable experience in a refined and yet intimate setting.
