During 1992-1995 he worked as an independent photographer for the Reflex and Respekt magazines, documenting conflicts in various places such as Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Albania. In the years 1995-1998 as a photographer of Reflex magazine, he traveled through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cuba, Eastern Zaire, Haiti, Somalia and other countries. Since becoming a photographer of Lidové noviny newspaper in 1998, he has also visited Southern Sudan, Kosovo, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Ingushetia, Israel and Palestine and many other countries. His photographs of Kosovo refugees are part of the prestigious selection of “This Century’s Top Photographs”. He is also the recipient of the UHNCR Prize for a series of photographs portraying blind people in West African Liberia. His portrait of the Afghani boy Adjamal, published by the Lidové noviny newspaper in 2001, has prompted the public collection of funds to sponsor the boy’s operation, a cornea transplant, in the Kabul hospital. This operation has been organized by the Berkat association. As part of the "Jeden svět" ("One World") festival, Michal Novotný’s photographs have been displayed in many cities and places around the Czech Republic.
