Guided tour of the Český Krumlov State Castle and Chateau

The Castle and Chateau complex, second largest in the Czech Republic, is one of the most important historic buildings in Central Europe. The complex, together with its Tower, forms a dominant feature above the town. Originally a Gothic castle from the 13thC, the complex was augmented in the 14thC, and underwent a Renaissance reconstruction in the 16thC. During the 17th and 18thC there were further reconstructions in Baroque and Rococo styles.

Visitors can take one of two routes through the Castle interiors (Guided tour I - Renaissance Chambers, Golden Carriage, Masquerade Hall; Guided Tour II - Schwarzenberg Chambers - 19thC, Picture Gallery, Plášťový Bridge corridors), can admire the richly decorated Tower stroll through the Castle’s 17thC Baroque Gardens, or visit the spectacular Baroque Theatre, one of the best-preserved historic theatres in the world.

An exhibition of the Castle’s original Baroque statues can be found in the subterranean spaces of the Castle‘s Lapidarium. The Wenceslas Cellars are vast underground spaces stretching three levels below the whole area of the 4th Castle courtyard. Presently this unique area under the patronage of the Czech Ceramics Design Agency is used for exhibitions of contemporary Czech and foreign artists. Particular to the Castle since the Rožmberks‘ time, live bears have been traditionally kept in the bear-enclosure under the footbridge to the gate.

The Castle interiors are open from 1 April to 31 October, daily except Mondays. Should Monday be a State holiday, the Castle is open to public, and closes the following day instead.
